Created in 1920 by a Spanish decree of law, the Casa de Velázquez has been working for nearly a century to develop creative and research activities related to the arts, languages and societies of the Iberian, Ibero-American and Maghreb countries. It thus contributes to the training of artists and young researchers, while promoting artistic and scientific exchanges on an international scale.

The Casa de Velázquez thus brings together the École des hautes études hispaniques et ibériques (EHEHI) and the Académie de France in Madrid, respectively dedicated to research and artistic creations.

The Académie de France in Madrid, the artistic department of the Casa de Velázquez, is a privileged space where artists of various geographical and cultural origins - around forty per year - develop their creativity, reflect on their research directions and share their ideas. The institution welcomes residents in the following six disciplines: architecture, visual arts, cinema, musical composition, photography and video art.

A place of experimentation where artistic practices and a colourful range of individual expressions come together with an open mind, the Académie de France in Madrid also plays a major role in the dissemination of contemporary works through a rich and varied programme and a vast network of local and international partners.

The scientific mission of the Casa de Velázquez is established by the École des hautes études hispaniques et ibériques. Both a training centre for young researchers and an international research centre in the field of Human and Social Sciences, it currently has eighteen members, most of whom are preparing a doctoral thesis.

The École also receives doctoral students benefiting from specific mobility aids, research grant recipients, contract researchers associated with multi-year programmes as well as high-level scientific researchers in residence. In addition to ensuring the scientific supervision of its residents, the EHEHI implements the scientific policy of the Casa de Velázquez and every year offers an important programme of international meetings.

The publications of the Casa de Velázquez promote and disseminate the work carried out within these two sections, centred on archaeology, history, languages, literatures, the arts and societies from Iberian, Ibero-American and Maghreb countries.

These publications - divided into three collections and a scientific journal - are part of the Unión de Editoriales Universitarias Españolas (UNE).

Finally, the keystone of the institution's intellectual and heritage missions, the library has more than 120,000 volumes and more than 800 current journals. Its collection, specializing in the Hispanic and Iberian cultural area, is accessible to anyone carrying out research, from the first year of a Masters.
