Colloque international à l'IFAO : Chronologies and Contexts of the First Intermediate Period

Résumé :
L’égyptologie n’étant encore parvenue à aucun consensus sur la chronologie de la Première Période intermédiaire et l’histoire de la fin du IIIe millénaire en Égypte, cette rencontre scientifique a pour objectif de rassembler un groupe de chercheurs travaillant sur différentes catégories de culture écrite, figurée et matérielle, afin de comparer les différentes plages chronologiques adoptées par chaque spécialisation pour délimiter la même période. Les spécialistes auront l’occasion de proposer des synthèses et de discuter de sources et de critères de datation dans l’étude de la statuaire, de la glyptique et dans d’autres domaines, comme l’épigraphie, la linguistique et la céramologie. Il sera également fructueux de partager des informations issues de recherches archéologiques récentes.
Les sujets traités seront les suivants : 1) phases internes et limites externes de la Première Période intermédiaire, 2) exactitude et limites des critères de datation adoptés dans le passé, validité des sources et de la bibliographie (par spécialité), 3) croisement de typo-chronologies, 4) nouveaux contextes archéologiques, 5) histoire et prosopographie, 6) historiographie ancienne et moderne, annales, herméneutique, 7) datations absolues.
Le colloque :
En raison de la pandémie, l’événement se tiendra au Caire, dans les locaux de l’IFAO, et sur Zoom, pour certains participants et pour les personnes souhaitant assister aux séances après enregistrement. Pour des raisons sanitaires, il est impossible d’assister sur place sans invitation.
Deux conférences publiques en ligne diffusées en direct sur Youtube seront données dans le cadre du colloque, par le Prof. Dr. Thomas Schneider (Université de Colombie britannique, Vancouver) et le Dr. Irene Forstner-Müller (Directrice de l’Institut archéologique autrichien du Caire), respectivement le mercredi 7 avril 2021 et le vendredi 9 avril 2021. The IFAO is organizing an international conference entitled: Chronologies and Contexts of the First Intermediate Period. The event will take place in Cairo in a hybrid format: in the premises of IFAO for some participants, and online, on Zoom application, for the rest of speakers and for subscribed attendees, from 7th to 10th April 2021.
The conference proceedings will be edited and published by the IFAO.
L’IFAO organise une conférence internationale intitulée : Chronologies et contextes de la Première Période intermédiaire. L’événement se déroulera au Caire en format hybride : dans les locaux de l’IFAO pour certains participants et en ligne, via Zoom, pour les conférenciers et les participants préalablement inscrits, du 7 au 10 avril 2021. Les actes de la conférence seront édités et publiés par l’IFAO.
Abstract:
As Egyptology has not yet reached a consensus on the chronology of the First Intermediate Period and the history of the end of the Third Millennium in Egypt, this symposium would aim to bring together a group of researchers working on different categories of written, figured and material culture, in order to compare the different chronological ranges that are adopted by each specialisation to delimit the same period. Specialists will have the opportunity to provide syntheses, or to discuss sources and dating criteria in epigraphy, statuary, glyptic, and other fields, such as linguistics and ceramology. This will be a unique occasion also to share information from recent archaeological research.
The critical topics are the following: 1) internal phases and external limits of the First Intermediate Period, 2) correctness/limits of past dating criteria, reference-sources and bibliography (by speciality), 3) crossing of typo-chronologies, 4) new evidence from the archaeological contexts, 5) history and prosopography, 6) ancient and modern historiography, annals, hermeneutics, 7) absolute dating.
The Venue:
Due to the pandemic, the event will be held in Cairo, in the premises of the IFAO, and on Zoom application, for some participants and for attendees after registration. For sanitary reasons, it is not possible to attend the conference in presence without invitation.
Two public online keynote lectures will be given in the framework of the conference, by Prof. Dr. Thomas Schneider (University of British Columbia, Vancouver) and Dr. Irene Forstner-Müller (Director of the Austrian Archaeological Institute in Cairo), respectively on Wednesday 7 April 2021 and Friday 9 April 2021.
